KALO-TARO PLANT

Many creation chants speak of the origins of the islands of Hawai'i. Hawaiians believe the gods Kane, Ku, and Lono made Heaven and Earth. It is also believed that Wakea, sky father and Papa, earth-mother, were procreators of humanity. According to Hawaiian mythology, the first born child died at birth and where that child was burried grew Haloanakalaukapalili, kalo- "plant with quivering leaves," known as the eldest brother of these islands. Haloa fed the people of Hawai'i. Hawaiians have  cultivated kalo to sustain the 'ohana ever since.
